Jennifer Scales and the Ancient Furnace

Jennifer Scales living in Minnesota. She is a freshman in high school. She manages to kick the ball in an amazing move. Later that night her father tests her kicking abilities, and both he and her mother say that some kind of change is happening to Jennifer.

Susan is her best friend. There's a new boy at school in her class, name of Skip.

Jennifer's parents tell her what is going to happen, and she ends up crying alone in her room.

She transforms into a dragon. The first time she does, it's very painful for her. Her father also transforms, as does her grandfather.

It's stated that she is a weredragon, that the weredragons have enemies, and an entire town of them was destroyed when she was a child, barely escaping with her parents. She will change into a weredragon twice a month, around the time of crescent moons.

Her father teaches her how to fly, land, and catch fish.

Her grandfather explains about the history of the weredragons and their enemies, the wereachnids and beaststalkers.

Jennifer, since she's some kind of blend of all three types of weredragons, will have to be trained in the abilities of all three kinds. One thing she's supposed to do is call lizards to her. She ends up calling an owl.

Later her father is kidnapped, and somewhat later the kidnapper captures Jennifer. The guy who did it wants to use Jennifer for his own purposes. In addition, the question about where the ancient furnace is is solved, and a beaststalker turns up to help expand the carnage.

This is, in general, a rather good book, and the ending chapters are some of the best. I do question somewhat Jennifer's fairly easy acceptance of being a weredragon; I think she should have protested more. She also never asked anyone if there was any kind of permanent cure to being a weredragon, something that could stop the change from happening permanently.
