Gilda Joyce: Psychic Investigator

This is cute story about two girls. Gilda is 13. Her father is dead. She's a very intelligent and very imaginative girl who loves to write, and is very interested in psychic things.

The other girl is also thirteen. She's Juliet, and lives in San Francisco in a Victorian-type mansion with a mysterious tower.

Through some imaginative stretching of the truth, Gilda manages to get an invitation to live with a while for Juliet for a while. Juliet has very dark moods. Her housekeeper sees ghosts about the place, and one of the ghosts seems to be her Aunt Melanie who jumped to her death from the tower. When Gilda arrives she at first is rejected by Juliet, but eventually they become friends.

Gilda's active imagination leads her to believe that Mr. Splinter, the owner of the mansion, may have murdered Melanie, but no matter what she tries Gilda cannot get any proof of any murder. However, there are strange noises in the house, and Juliet seems to be talking to someone sometimes at night, but she doesn't remember doing any such thing.

Gilda is very tenacious, though, and she and Juliet finally figure out a way to enter the tower to try to find out what really happened to Melanie, whether it was murder or suicide.

The story is quite cute, really. There do seem to be some ghosts, but generally things are possibilities and are not proven realities.

The only criticism I would have is the reference to the use of the ouija board. Most anyone with any experience in the paranormal knows that ouija boards are not to be used; they are potentially dangerous and can let in negative influences.

Other than that, it's a neat, relatively light-weight mystery.
