Heir Apparent

The story takes place in the future when virtual reality arcades of a very advanced nature are in existence. The story centers around a girl named Giannine who is going to use one of the machines, but, in order to do that, she must walk past a picket group from CPOC, or Citizens to Protect Our Children, which is like a present-day family values, anti-sex, anti-violence group.

She takes part in a fantasy role-playing adventure as Janine, a girl who has been brought up as a sheepherder but who is, in reality, heir to the throne.

If she can live long enough to obtain that. Unfortunately for her, the machine is damaged by the protesters and Giannine is stuck inside, and could die if she takes too long to finish the game.

She has to figure out how to finish the game before her time runs out and her body possibly dies from the effect of the machine. At first, she gets killed over and over in the game, but gradually comes to learn what types of decisions are necessary for her to get around those who would kill her in the game. She also has to deal with a nasty dragon, several wizards and a whole host of pesky ghosts.

It's a really good book, another winner from Vivian Velde.
