Homeless Bird

Koly is a young girl living in India. Her family is fairly poor and, following custom, they engage Koly to someone she has never met.

It turns out to be a major mistake (for Koly, at least), since her husband is also young and in addition is dying. It seems to have been a move on the husband's family's part to get money to take him to the Ganges river to try to cure him.

There's a lot of very well-done description of the trip and the city that Koly ends up going to. Things go bad for her, though, and then they manage to get even a whole lot worse.

Koly ends up having to live as a homeless person on the street for a while but then her luck turns and she's able to find someone who is able to provide her with a temporary home and a job.

Koly is a very hard-working young girl and, through her efforts and those of the people helping her, her life is able to finally get back on track and she's able to achieve some much-deserved happiness in her life.

One warning; read the book all the way through. Things get very, very bad for Koly, but it does have a good ending so it won't be disappointing.
