Hostage

Kaci is eleven and is unhappy that nothing really exciting has happened to her.

Be careful what you wish for.

A group of crooks has been stealing things from houses in various areas, and Kaci and her family are in the process of moving things into a new home when the crooks decide to steal their items.

The problem is that Kaci is there when they are there and she is taken hostage, along with an elderly neighbor, and it appears that both could end up dead.

This is an ok book, but one that could prove upsetting to younger readers. It really zeros in on the problem of crime and just how vicious some criminals can be, and shows that no matter where one lives, crime is going to be there. This is a story about the real world, not a fantasy world, and thus is somewhat more realistic than many other young adult novels, and the feeling it leaves with the reader is that there is nowhere safe.
