The Jamestown Colony

This is an interesting book on the Jamestown Colony, starting out with information about how investors in England hoped to become rich off the colony, thinking it would find all sorts of gold and other treasures. It also points out how some of the settlers thought they were too good to get their hands dirty and do any work.

There were also leadership problems and problems with the Native Americans. The death rate from all causes, especially disease, was quite high. For example, 500 colonists started; only 65 were left after the winter of starvation.

In the end the colony survived and other colonies were started.
