Keeping the Moon

Colie is 15 years old. Her mother is a world-famous fitness guru and has gone on a publicity tour, sending Colie to live with her eccentric aunt Mira.

The emphasis of the book is on Colie's coming to terms with her past. She was previously fat (before her mother became the fitness guru), and had to endure a lot of ridicule from other's her age. All of that negative material became part of her makeup until she was no longer able to see herself as anything but fat and undesirable, even once she was down to a normal weight.

Colie ends up working at a restaurant with two women and one guy, the women living together (just living together) and the various problems they go through. Norman, the guy who works there, is also an artist and ends up painting Colie's portrait.

It's a very good book, especially in the way it shows how a negative self-attitude can arise from unfeeling, sometimes vicious comments by other people. It's something that can stay with a person for their entire lives. Fortunately Colie had help and is finally able to come to terms with her own past, allowing her to move on with her life.

Worth reading.
