A Light in the Storm

This story is about a fifteen-year-old girl named Amelia who lives with her parents, her father working at a lighthouse in Delaware. The basic theme of the story is how the Civil War and slavery tore apart not just the nation but individual families. Her father is anti-slavery, but her mother is pro-slavery.

Actually, her mother seems to have a whole lot of issues. She seems so suffer from arthritis, but also seems (at least to me) to use that as an excuse to be nasty to others, especially her husband, and to avoid doing what would be considered her share of the work.

Amelia, meanwhile, has hardly a moment for anything but work as she helps to teach school and she also has a shift manning the lighthouse, along with cooking, shopping and doing a whole lot of other tasks around the place. Her brother ends up fighting on the side of the Union.
