The Orchids and Gumbo Poker Club

This is basically like two books in one. First is the story of The Orchids and Gumbo Poker Club about Darcy Lou, a girl who lives in the bayou with her relatives. This part of the story is about Darcy Lou being attracted to a guy from a different social class than hers, and how her relatives help her get ready to attend a fancy ball in order to meet him.

This much is a very nice, sort of traditional story of its type.

Then, there's the Lizzie part, which is where Lizzie is reading the story in order to make a book report and she makes various doodles in the margin and writes a number of comments, some of which are actually quite good. Thus, it makes it a two-layer story, and it works together pretty well.
