Nine Days A Queen

This is the story of Lady Jane Grey who was Queen of England for nine days before she lost her head. Literally. The reader gets a good idea of just how tenuous royal life was at the time, and just how many individuals were scheming and plotting behind the scenes to make sure that this or that person ended up in positions of power, even becoming King or Queen. There's really no winners, actually. Everybody pretty much loses in the end in this type of vicious chaos. Young people are used by adults like there were pieces on a chess board to further the aims of their elders. The young people were also not really allowed to be young; they had to grow up very, very quickly. Most of the adults in the story come off as being rather nasty characters (which they were in real life). The story also notes the incredible viciousness of the religious feelings of the time, pitting Catholics against Protestants. It's a very dark but still fascinating look at the history of some of Britain's rules.
