Now You See It

Start out with a girl named Wendy. Wendy's vision is terrible, and when her glasses get stomped on as she's going to school she shifts to a pair of sunglasses she found in her yard.

Sunglasses that allow her to see a woman killed in an auto accident get up from her physical body, walk over and say hi. Sunglasses that cause a beautiful girl in class to look like a hundred-year-old crone, and a guy to look like an elf.

To complicate things even more Wendy has a stepsister who she doesn't exactly get along with and a grandmother in a nursing home whose grip on things going on around her is slipping further and further away.

Those types of things Wendy could probably have handled, somehow, but when you add an interdimensional gate, warring elves and a time travel trip to the 1950's where she meets the young version of her grandmother, things start to get a little hectic for Wendy.

There's also the mean dog that now looks like a sheep and whose name is Brave Heart. And there's also the dragon. A dragon that Wendy gets rather close to. A dragon that breathes fire and likes to incinerate things that bother it.

Oh, yes, there's also the sort of fairy that eats socks. Even sweaty socks.

What you have is a rather unusual story that has sort of a bittersweet ending. It's a good story and it also has its funny moments. Even the chapter titles can be funny, like The Bluebird of Unhappiness.

Another really good book from Vivian Velde.
