One of those hideous books where the mother dies

This book is written in the free prose style that Sonya Sones uses and is about a young girl, Ruby, whose mother dies.

Ruby ends up going to the opposite side of the country to LA, to live with her father who, as far as she knows, left the family years and years ago and has had virtually no contact with her in all that time.

So, she's naturally angry about leaving her school, her house, her friends and her boyfriend behind to live with a man that she absolutely hates.

Things aren't always extremely clear-cut, though, as Ruby finds out. Her father has a secret, and there was an actual reason for him not to be contacting Ruby.

There's also a neat section where Ruby is dreaming and receives a message from her mother, telling her to leave the house right then, immediately. Ruby does, and before long there is an earthquake. The quake caused a heavy bookcase to fall over in Ruby's bedroom and right onto her bed; if she had stayed in the bed, she might have been killed.

It's a very good story, taking turns you didn't expect. Definitnely worth reading.
