Origins

The main part of book takes place in the 1680's. It's in Scotland during the time of a major witch hunt. It's the diary of a girl named Rose, a young girl who was a witch. She talks about the fear the witches live under of being accused by someone in the village. Her mother talks about trouble in the form of feuds amongst the seven Wiccan clans.

Even back then there was great hatred of the clan that Morgan belongs to.

Rose is gathering herbs one day and meets a boy she falls in love with. The boy is from a different clan. Rose is impatient with the way things are done, and sees no harm in using magic her own way. Her father had been involved in dark magick.

Rose, who is 17, starts to think that her way is the right way, and that the others are too stuffy and too afraid to change their ways, although she also hopes to someday unite all the clans. She turns to dark magick spells when another girl takes the buy she wants to marry.

Rose's mother is shot with an arrow, and Rose thinks her rival was the one behind it, so she uses dark magic to get even.

Things get worse for Rose as she is accused of witchcraft and imprisoned, and this is what leads her to create the dark wave that can wipe out entire villages. She still thinks she is doing good, but she has really become a tool of the dark forces.

A very good book and a very good explanation of the origin of the dark wave.
