The book does a good job showing the various ways in which the North and the South were different, and how this ended up leading to the widespread use of slaves in the South. It examines the various compromises and steps that were undertaken to try to avoid a war between the North and the South. It also discusses the Underground Railroad, John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry, and the book Uncle Tom's Cabin.
It's a very good way to see just what led up to the Civil War, and how people tried to avoid the war but couldn't.
