Sedulity

David Forsyth, William Rosenthal. E-book from Amazon.

I've read a bunch of apocalyptic books and watched a lot of disaster and apocalyptic movies. There is no doubt in my mind that this book is the top one of all I have read and, if it had been (carefully) made into a movie it would very probably be one of the best ever done.

The basic theme is the asteroid-colliding-with-the-ocean one. In this case, though, the center of the human action is on a cruise ship which is not far from the impact zone. Characters include a ship captain that is incredibly efficient; a weatherman, a retired geologist, the wives of the ship's captain and the weatherman, the staff of the ship and the people on board, one of which is truly annoying.

The book goes into the immediate aftermath of the impact, including the huge waves generated, rain mixed with blazing rocks, how the impact affects the ocean floor and the continental ridges, and the damage to the ship and the loss of life due to the impact.

One of the best points of the book is that it makes sense and follows along pretty much with what could realistically happen should such a collision occur. The characters are real, the damage is plausible and the whole story ties together well.
