The Starving Time

Subtitled Elizabeth's Diary, Book Two, Jamestown, Virginia, 1609

Elizabeth is only nine years old and is living in the Jamestown colony. The colony has begun to fall apart as Miles Standish has left and there is no one person who call fill the power vacuum left and lead the colony effectively. Relationships with the Indians have gotten worse, and relationships among the colonists themselves have gotten bad.

Food becomes scarce and, as it does, disease begins to decimate the ranks of the colonists. Some go outside the fort to find food, but don't necessarily return. An attempt to start a branch colony apparently fails. Elizabeth and her family are close to starving, and then her mother becomes terribly ill.

The book shows just how bad the conditions in Jamestown were, and how close to total failure the colony had become. An interesting work.
