Witch Season: Summer

The story concerns a number of young people spending the summer together. They encounter two witches, one named Season and one named Daniel, who have met in the past and fought each other. Season is responsible for killing Daniel's brother and numerous innocent people, and Kerry and her friends have now become targets themselves.

One of the young people ends up getting killed by her, and Daniel and the remaining people finally confront Season in a fight literally to the death.

This is the first of a four-part series which I most likely will get and read, but without a great deal of enthusiasm. The novel is ok, but the ending bothers me. By the way, STOP READING HERE IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW THE ENDING!!!

In the final battle, Daniel and the others face off against Season, with Daniel and Season fighting each other using their magical abilities. What bothers me is that none of the others brought any kind of weapons at all; nothing. Further, they don't even try to find any, and when I say weapons I'm talking about any kinds of weapons at all, even down to just picking up a big rock and throwing it.

Daniel had gotten satellite images of Season's house, and he had plotted out their attack positions. They had the witch surrounded. Granted, if any of them had directly attacked her they would have in turn been attacked and likely killed or at least severely injured by her. But the way the fight unfolds, Season is damaged considerably by Daniel's initial attack. If any of them had so much as a bow and arrows, they could have attacked Season when she started to revive and attack Daniel, possibly enough that Daniel could have finished the job. At the very least, if any of them had any kind of a pitching arm they could have picked up some rocks and thrown them at her, trying to hit her in the head and disorient her.

I know this is supposed to be a novel about magic vs. magic, but I think that common sense shouldn't be left out of the picture also. If you were going to be involved in a fight to the death with someone, wouldn't you take every precaution you could, including finding some kind of weapons, just in case you might get a chance to use it? I'm not saying they even should have opened the attack; letting Daniel fight Season alone was the smartest thing to do, but they could have been ready to lend some help. Even a slingshot would have proven to be of some use, but they had absoutely, totally not one single thing to help in the fight.

I know that the plot device with Season not killing all of them is to allow three more novels to be written, but I just am bothered somewhat when something that seems so obvious (as taking every step to protect yourself and make yourself useful during a to-the-death battle) is utterly ignored. Other than that, the book is fairly good, but not great.
