The Book Thief

This is a rather long book about a girl named Liesel Meminger whose brother dies on a train that she and her mother are taking. The events take place during the rise of Adolph Hitler, and there's a lot of time taken up by what was happening to the Jews.

However, the book is rather unusual in that it is told, not from the viewpoint of the main female character, but from the viewpoint of Death itself. Death has taken an interest in Liesel who he terms a book thief since she, on occasion, steals books.

It's hard to describe this book. Despite its length, it remains interesting throughout. The various asides prove to be interesting. Almost everything that is going on in her life is interesting, and you really want to keep reading to see what is going to happen next. An excellent book.
