Wintergirls

Lia is 18 and has left her mother to live with her divorced father. Her friend, Cassie, dies alone in a motel room and that's the event that triggers everything else in the book. Both Cassie and Lia were in sort of a contest about which one could be the thinnest girl in the school. Lia has already been in the hospital and/or a mental facility more than once for what she has been doing. She's 5' 5”, and her goal is to keep losing weight which she does, going from around 99 pounds on down. She's also a cutter.

Cassie, now dead, seems to keep appearing to Lia and there's no doubt that Lia's mental state is not exactly stable. Her parents continue to quarrel with each other, and Lia has to end up living with her mother again (her mother and she argue constantly). Lia has a younger sister named Emma, and something that Lia does ends up upsetting her sister and particularly her mother.

That even also serves as a trigger to Lia's finally coming to terms with what she has been doing and trying to change her behavior once and for all.

There's also a discussion section with the book and, considering how important the general theme is (starving oneself to death, basically), that's a very good idea.
