W.I.T.C.H. #2: The Disappearance

In this novel the girls are still basically trying to get used to the fact that they actually have powers, but the problem is that they are not sure yet how to use them and they end up having to confront their former friend Elyon who apparently has gone over to the dark side. In addition, one of the girls has caused a boy to disappear and she needs the help of the other girls to find him.

Then one of the characters from the first novel ends up dying.

It's not a bad story series as long as you don't really question things much. In the series, for example, evil was banished to another dimension and the girls have to stop it from re-entering into our dimension through a series of portals that apparently all just happen to be in the town.

Yet the things that happen in our own world are sometimes so evil that it seems that the people behind these events would have also been banished to the other dimension. Or are they all non-humans in the other reality? Or are some of them replacing humans in ours in order to cause trouble? And why are all the portals in the same town?

In addition, the idea of five girls being gotten together and finding out they have considerable powers is getting to be pretty much an overworked theme, from Sailor Moon on.

Still, with only two novels it's hard to judge the entire series, and it could end up turning out to be really good. At the moment, it's mildly interesting, but sort of cliched.
