The World We Live In

This is the third book in the series about the moon being hit by a meteor and getting nearer the Earth and causing volcanic eruptions, ash clouds and other changes that resulted in a large percentage of the Earth's inhabitants dying.

Miranda is 17 and still lives with her family, desperately trying to survive. They have very little food and go through houses that have been abandoned, or in which the people have died, to find what supplies they can. They eat only two meals a day, and neither of those is plentiful.

Their main food source comes from handouts once a week from City Hall.

Things get much more complicated when Miranda's father, his new wife and child, and two others show up, one of them a boy named Alex. They find out that there are safe towns where there is relatively reliable electrical power and a decent supply of food, but those towns seem only to be for the rich and the politicians.

So Miranda and the others have to do whatever they can to find enough food and water. A tornado makes things even worse. Then Miranda ends up killing someone.

It's a very, very grim world in which they live, and the author describes that world quite well. It's also not surprising at all that politicians and the rich are the ones that end up with everything while what other people have survived are left with almost nothing, just like the movie 2012 where politicians and the rich are allowed on to the arks but everyone else, including the workers that helped build the arks, are left to die.
