A House Divided

This is an excellent book for young adults and younger. It's the story of a family during the Civil War. Susanne and her brother Stephen are forced to live with their Aunt and Uncle after their parents are killed in a fire. The Uncle is as mean as can be, and the Aunt is pretty much around the bend and halfway into the next county.

It doesn't help when another relative, who is sane but as nasty as the Uncle, shows up with her constantly whining son. Stephen and a friend of his run off to join the military, and the book does a very good job of showing just how rough it was on them. There are some descriptions of things in this book that might upset those who are sensitive to gory parts of books.

The 'House Divided' concept comes from the fact that the Uncle is a very strong supporter of the South; Stephen supports the Union..

To make matters worse, they live quite near Gettysburg and will end directly and indirectly involved in one of the most important Civil War battles to take place.

This is an extremely good book.
