The Coffin Quilt

This is a historical fiction work which is based almost entirely on factual people and events from the feud between the Hatfields and the McCoys. It covers events from 1880 to 1889, going into how at least one phase of the feud was started by a McCoy girl running off with and wanting to marry a Hatfield boy.

The book shows that there were already bad feelings between the two groups, and this event just gave them an excuse to ramp up the level of violence considerably.

It's shown that we are dealing with people who are extremely poor, extremely religious, extremely superstitious, and who are more than willing to use guns to settle their differences.

The book is very well written, and it is extremely interesting to see how these groups of people such incredibly violent lives, wild-west type 'justice' in Kentucky and West Virginia.
