Why I Took A Video Down From My YouTube Account

Yesterday (or maybe earlier, but I didn't notice) I got a notice from YouTube that I had a video with content that might be contained in someone else's song. It wasn't exactly copyright violation (I'm unclear on this), but I think it was something to do with royalties. It turns out that the parody I did, "What A Friend We Have in Cheeses", had already been done (and better!) by Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds. In other words, we both used that exact title and the same hymn-tune (I am assuming, since I haven't heard their version). Their lyrics, however, are far superior to the ones I came up with. But probably if it were me, I'd be thinking I'd been ripped off. I had never heard of their version until yesterday, when someone on Ukulele Underground informed me that Nick Cave had already done it.

So this morning, to keep my YouTube account in good standing, I took the video down. I'm going to do a little explanation/vblog-y video later today explaining. ETA: Here is the explanation video:

Tuesday, August 3, 2010, 10:48am: This is for The No Copyright Claim Cover Campaign on Ukulele Underground. This song is a cover of an original song on guitar by MrPlatypus70. Please go check out his channel and subscribe! Here is the original song.

The instrument I'm playing is a custom-made teardrop dulcimer made for me by Keith Young. His site is here. This is one of two instruments I have that was paid for by selling used books & CDs!

Monday, August 16, 2010, 12:33pm: Halfway through with August. Will the summer EVER end?! ::sigh:: I hate the hot weather. >:-(

I've been avoiding my computer and online in general for the last couple of weeks, just reading (books on my Kindle) and watching lots of stuff on DVD with Bunnicula (yay "Eureka"!). I needed to GAFIAte (Get Away From It All). I've peeked in on Twitter and my email off and on via my iPod Touch, but just did minimal stuff.

Anyway, here is a video I did at the end of July but only just uploaded this morning. This song is by Tom Paxton.

Sunday, August 22, 2010, 10:34am: Today I left/resigned from The Garden of Friendship, due to time constraints. Too many things going on here at home. Some days I don't even turn on my computer. My Garden of Friendship dedication page/section is still up, though.   I still have gifts and awards and lots of other things I should put up--I got way behind on that. Anyway, The Garden of Friendship is a lovely group; and if you are looking for a nice group of folks to join online, I highly recommend it!

Wednesday, August 25, 2010, 4:53pm: This is the story of one Irish tenant farming family during the mass evictions that started in 1847. I wrote this after B. and I had watched the TV series, "The Hanging Gale". This is my second entry for the Bring the Song Challenge. Lyrics below the video.

1847

CHORUS: On the road, on the road
Who will carry our heavy load?
On the road, on the road
Where can we go now?

Our small farm potatoes grew
Just enough to see us through
Then the blight with skies of grey
Now the rent we could not pay. CHORUS

Early morning soldiers came
Dragged us out, our house aflame
No one shelter could us give
How are we supposed to live? CHORUS

Strong the wind and cold the rain
Food is low and there's much pain
Many fall along the way
Ireland suffers every day.

On the road, on the road
Weary from our heavy load
On the road, on the road
We will rest a while now
We shall fall asleep now
We will ...
