The Clue of the Tapping Heels

This is one of the books that was not considerably revised. There is a 1939 text version and a 1969 text version.

The story revolves around a woman who has a lot of Persian cats, raising them to sell some and make money. Someone has been stealing the cats, though. In addition, there are strange tapping sounds in her house. Nancy gets involved although sometimes she has to leave Bess and George to handle things since she is performing in a play (as she performed in The Clue of the Dancing Puppet).

The story also involves the former owners of the house and their son, who has some fairly severe mental problems. There's also a neighbor who hates the cats and has threatened to have them removed from the house.

The person responsible for the tapping, and perhaps the cat stealing, seems to be able to come and go in the house as he pleases despite locks being changed and the entire place being searched by the girls. More cats go missing and, at a cat show, some guy seems to be selling the stolen cats.

It all makes for a fairly complex and very interesting mystery that Nancy has to solve.
